Functional Fitness

What is Functional Fitness?

Functional fitness is a method of exercise training DSTT utilizes to develop healthy, balanced muscles so you can perform everyday activities and athletic endeavors with peak efficiency and safety. We train and strengthen your body by using exercises to put you into positions which combine muscle groups that need to work successfully together in real life situations. This is a departure from past conventional wisdom about exercise, which prioritized repetitive work on isolated muscle groups.

DSTT Functional Fitness Training includes the methods of Gray Cook, a nationally recognized practicing physical therapist and one of the most influential figures in rehabilitation, fitness, and conditioning. Many musculoskeletal injuries and vulnerabilities can be traced to behavioral movement. By analyzing an individual’s movements, strength, flexibility, and range of motion abilities, we can develop exercise regimens and lifestyle adjustments to cut to the core of problems from lower back pain to obesity. This allows individuals to improve their fitness, posture, and quality of life.

Functional fitness exercises train your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks by simulating common movements you might do at home, at work, or in sports. While using various muscles in the upper and lower body at the same time, functional fitness exercises also emphasize core stability.

For example, a squat is a functional exercise; it trains the muscles used when you rise up and down from a chair or pick up low objects. By training your muscles to work the way they do in everyday tasks, you prepare your body to perform well in a variety of common situations.

Many functional exercises involve movement of multiple joints and muscles. Instead of only moving the elbows, for example, a functional exercise might involve the elbows, shoulders, spine, hips, knees, and ankles.

Functional exercise training is key for everyone’s fitness and is especially beneficial as part of a comprehensive program for older adults to improve balance, agility, and muscle strength.
