Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates, who, through rigorous study and observation, determined that life-style choices—poor posture and inefficient breathing methods—were often the roots of poor health. He developed a system of movements and exercises, which emphasize the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support the human musculoskeletal framework and operation.

Core strength is the foundation of Pilates exercise. The core muscles are the deep, internal muscles of the abdomen and back. When the core muscles are strong and operating efficiently, they work in tandem with the more superficial muscles of the trunk to support the spine and movement.

The Six Pilates Principles:

The Pilates method always emphasizes quality over quantity. Pilates exercises do not include a lot of repetitions for each move. Instead, doing each exercise fully with precision is key. There are six principles, which are essential to every Pilates workout. They are:

Centering

All Pilates exercises are sourced from the center of the body, the area between the lower ribs and the pubic bone.

Concentration

Full attention and commitment must be given to each movement in order to obtain maximum benefit.

Control

Every Pilates exercise is done with complete muscular control.

Precision

In Pilates, awareness is sustained throughout each movement. There is an appropriate placement, alignment relative to other body parts, and trajectory for each part of the body.

Breath

Integral to all Pilates exercises is breathing coordination – inhaling and exhaling of full breaths in rhythm with body movements.

Flow

Pilates exercise is done in a flowing manner. Fluidity, grace, and ease are goals applied to all exercises.
